blackjack is the most popular table game in American casinos and the one where skill matters most. The goal is simple: beat the dealer hand without going over 21. Because your decisions change the math, blackjack offers one of the lowest house edges on the floor when you play correct basic strategy. At a 3:2 table with good rules, the house edge can drop to roughly 0.5 percent. At a 6:5 table, it nearly triples. Knowing the difference is the first and most important rule of blackjack. You'll find live tables at most major properties. See our full US casino directory for venue contact details and hours.

Blackjack is the game where player decisions directly affect the outcome. No other table game offers this level of control. The house edge of 0.5 percent with perfect basic strategy makes it the best table game for serious players, and the simple rules make it accessible to beginners. The biggest threat to your bankroll is the 6:5 payout, which is spreading across casino floors. A 6:5 table changes the game from a skill-based contest to a house-favored grind. Always verify the blackjack payout before you sit. For players who want more action, Spanish 21 and Free Bet Blackjack offer variant rules with different strategy requirements.

How to play Blackjack

  1. Place your bet in the circle. Check the table placard for minimum bet and blackjack payout. Look for 3:2 and avoid 6:5.

  2. You receive two cards face up. The dealer gets one up and one down. Number cards count at face value, face cards are 10, ace is 1 or 11.

  3. Choose how to act: hit (take a card), stand (keep your total), double (double your bet for one card), split (turn a pair into two hands), or surrender (forfeit half your bet).

  4. The dealer reveals the hole card and must hit until reaching 17. Whether the dealer hits soft 17 is posted on the table.

  5. The hand closest to 21 without busting wins. A two-card 21 is a blackjack and pays 3:2. Equal totals push.

Blackjack Rules and Payouts

Standard blackjack uses 6 or 8 decks dealt from a shoe. Cards are face up. The dealer stands on soft 17 (S17) on good tables, but hits soft 17 (H17) on many tables. The difference adds about 0.2 percent to the house edge. A blackjack pays 3:2 on the best tables ($15 for a $10 bet) and 6:5 on the worst ($12 for a $10 bet). Doubling on 9-11 is standard. Double after split (DAS) is player-favorable. Surrender is available at some tables and allows you to forfeit half your bet on a weak hand.

Side bets like Lucky Ladies, Lucky Lucky, and Buster Blackjack add optional wagers with higher house edges. The insurance bet is offered when the dealer shows an ace and pays 2:1 if the dealer has blackjack. Insurance is mathematically a losing bet for basic strategy players and should never be taken. For a deeper look at side bets, see our Lucky Ladies guide and Lucky Lucky guide.

  • What is the house edge in blackjack?

With correct basic strategy on a 3:2 game where the dealer stands on soft 17, the house edge can fall to about 0.5 percent. Rule variations such as 6:5 payouts, dealer hitting soft 17, and limited doubling all raise that figure.

Editorial Strategy

Strategy & etiquette for Blackjack

  • Always split aces and eights. Never split tens or fives.

  • Stand on hard 17 or higher. Hit hard totals of 8 or less.

  • Double down on 11 against any dealer card, and on 10 unless the dealer shows a 10 or ace.

  • Stand on 12 through 16 when the dealer shows 2 through 6, since the dealer is likely to bust.

  • Never take insurance. It carries a high house edge and is a side bet on the dealer hole card.

  • Memorize a basic strategy card. Most casinos let you keep one at the table.

Blackjack Strategy

Basic strategy is a set of mathematically optimal decisions for every possible hand against every possible dealer up card. It reduces the house edge to roughly 0.5 percent on a good 3:2 game. The strategy covers when to hit, stand, double, split, and surrender. The most common mistakes: standing on soft 17, splitting 10s, taking insurance, and playing at 6:5 tables. A basic strategy card costs a few dollars and is allowed at most tables.

Etiquette matters at the blackjack table. Use hand signals rather than words: scrape the felt for a hit, wave your hand for a stand, place chips next to your bet for a double. Never touch your cards in a face-up game. Tip the dealer with an occasional bet placed for them when you are winning. For variants, double deck blackjack offers a lower house edge and single deck blackjack offers the lowest edge but is harder to find with 3:2 payouts.

Where to Play Blackjack

Blackjack is available at every US casino. The quality of the game varies dramatically. The best games are found at off-Strip Las Vegas casinos, downtown properties, and tribal casinos. The worst games (6:5 payouts, horrible rules) are common on the Las Vegas Strip at low-minimum tables. Before you sit, check the placard for the blackjack payout, the S17/H17 rule, the doubling rules, and the deck count. Browse our US casino directory to find venues near you.

  • Is card counting legal in US casinos?

Counting cards using only your mind is legal. It is not cheating and no federal or state law prohibits it. However, casinos are private businesses and can refuse service or ask skilled counters to leave.
