Mississippi Stud is a house-banked poker game where you compete against a paytable rather than against a dealer hand. You start with an ante, receive two cards, and then raise across three streets as the remaining five community cards are revealed. Your final five-card hand is paid according to a posted paytable starting at a pair of 6s. There is no dealer hand to beat and no bluffing. The only decision is whether to raise or fold at each street, and the correct choices depend on your hand strength and the paytable. You'll find live tables at most major properties. See our full US casino directory for venue contact details and hours.

Mississippi Stud is one of the more strategic house-banked poker games because you make decisions at three separate streets. The game rewards patience: folding weak hands early is cheaper than chasing draws across all five cards. If you enjoy Let It Ride or Three Card Poker, Mississippi Stud offers a similar pull-back mechanic with more decision points and higher potential payouts.

How to play Mississippi Stud

  1. Place an Ante bet. The dealer deals two cards face down and one community card face up.

  2. Based on your two cards and the first community card, choose to raise 1x-3x your Ante or fold. Folding loses your Ante.

  3. A second community card is revealed. You may again raise 1x-3x or fold.

  4. The third and final community card is revealed. You may raise 1x or check. If you check and the dealer does not qualify, your Ante pushes.

  5. Your best five-card hand is paid from the paytable. A pair of 6s through 10s pushes. A pair of Jacks or better pays 1:1, scaling up to a royal flush at 500:1.

  6. The dealer qualifies with a pair of 2s or better. If the dealer does not qualify, your Ante pushes but your raises still pay.

Mississippi Stud Rules and Payouts

Mississippi Stud is dealt from a standard 52-card deck. You receive two hole cards and five community cards are dealt face up in three stages: one on third street, one on fourth street, and three on fifth street. At each stage you can raise 1x-3x your Ante (3x on third and fourth streets, 1x on fifth) or fold. Your final five-card hand uses your best combination of hole cards and community cards.

The paytable starts at a push for a pair of 6s through 10s. A pair of Jacks or better pays 1:1. Two pair pays 2:1, three of a kind pays 3:1, a straight pays 4:1, a flush pays 6:1, a full house pays 10:1, four of a kind pays 40:1, a straight flush pays 100:1, and a royal flush pays 500:1. The dealer qualifies with a pair of 2s or better. If the dealer does not qualify, your Ante pushes but your raise bets still pay based on the paytable.

  • What is the difference between Mississippi Stud and Let It Ride?

Mississippi Stud uses a multi-street raise structure with decisions at three separate stages, while Let It Ride has two pull-back decisions. Mississippi Stud pays against a paytable with higher top payouts (500:1 for a royal flush), while Let It Ride pays against a lower paytable. Mississippi Stud is more strategic but has a higher house edge.

Editorial Strategy

Strategy & etiquette for Mississippi Stud

  • Raise the maximum 3x on third street with any pair of 6s or better, any three cards to a royal flush, or any three suited high cards.

  • On fourth street, raise 3x with any pair, any four-flush, or any open-ended straight draw. Raise 1x-2x with marginal draws.

  • On fifth street, raise 1x with any pair of 6s or better, any four-flush, or any open-ended straight draw. Check and fold everything else.

  • Fold aggressively on third street if you hold nothing. Unconnected, unsuited low cards are not worth chasing.

  • The paytable matters. Compare the full house and flush payouts between casinos -- higher paytables significantly improve the return.

  • Side bets like the 3-Card Bonus carry high house edges. Treat them as entertainment.

Mississippi Stud Strategy

The optimal strategy for Mississippi Stud follows a simple rule: raise 3x on third street with any pair, any three cards to a royal flush, or any three suited cards Jack or higher. Fold everything else. On fourth street, raise 3x with any pair, any four-flush, or any open-ended straight draw. Raise 1x-2x with marginal draws like a gut-shot straight or a three-flush. On fifth street, raise 1x with any pair of 6s or better or any strong draw. Check and fold everything weaker.

The key to Mississippi Stud is avoiding the trap of chasing weak draws. Unlike Caribbean Stud Poker, where one raise decision covers the entire hand, Mississippi Stud tempts you to put good money after bad across multiple streets. If your third-street hand is marginal, fold early. The Ante loss is cheaper than raising into a losing hand three times.
