Where to play Craps in the US

Showing 12 of 413 venues

Craps is the most energetic game on the casino floor. Players bet on the outcome of two dice, and a winning roll for the table can turn the pit into a party. The layout looks intimidating with dozens of betting areas, but the core bet is simple: the Pass Line, backed by free odds. Those two bets together offer one of the best values in the casino, with a house edge that approaches zero the more odds you take. The crowded betting area is mostly full of bad bets -- ignore them and stick to the line. You'll find live tables at most major properties. See our full US casino directory for venue contact details and hours.

Craps is the game where the whole table wins together. When a shooter gets hot, the noise level rises and the chips pile up. The game is more intimidating than it is difficult. You only need to know the Pass Line bet to start, and you can add free odds as you get comfortable. The layout's complexity is mostly there to confuse new players into making bad bets. Stay on the line and you are playing one of the best games in the casino. Compare this to sic bo, the other major dice game, which has a much higher house edge.

How to play Craps

  1. Bet the Pass Line before a new shooter begins. This is the foundational bet and the only bet you need to start.

  2. The come-out roll: 7 or 11 wins the Pass Line. 2, 3, or 12 loses. Any other number becomes the point.

  3. Once a point is set, the shooter keeps rolling. The Pass Line wins if the point repeats before a 7.

  4. After a point is set, back your Pass Line bet with free odds. This bet pays true odds with no house edge.

  5. Never say 'seven' at the table. It is bad luck and bad etiquette. Use 'red' or 'big red' instead.

  6. Place your own chips on self-service bets. Ask the dealer to place bets in the middle of the layout.

Craps Rules and Layout

The craps layout is divided into self-service bets (Pass Line, Don't Pass, Come, Don't Come, Place, Field, Big 6 and 8) and dealer-placed bets (hardways, one-roll propositions). The shooter rolls two dice. The come-out roll decides immediately: 7 or 11 wins, 2/3/12 loses. Any other number (4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10) becomes the point. The shooter rolls until the point repeats (Pass Line wins) or a 7 appears (Pass Line loses, the shooter sevens out).

The free odds bet is placed behind the Pass Line after a point is set. It pays true odds: 2:1 on 4 or 10, 3:2 on 5 or 9, 6:5 on 6 or 8. The odds bet has zero house edge, making it the only free bet in the casino. The standard odds multiple is 3-4-5x, meaning you can bet 3x on 4/10, 4x on 5/9, and 5x on 6/8. Some casinos offer 10x or 20x odds, which are even better for the player.

  • What is the best bet in craps?

The Pass Line backed by free odds is the best play. The Pass Line carries a 1.41 percent edge, and the free odds portion has no house edge at all, which lowers your overall edge the more odds you take.

Editorial Strategy

Strategy & etiquette for Craps

  • Stick to the Pass Line or Don't Pass and always back with maximum free odds.

  • Place bets on the 6 and 8 are reasonable. They hit often and carry a low edge of 1.52 percent.

  • Always take the maximum odds your bankroll can afford. This dilutes the house edge on your total action.

  • Avoid the center-layout proposition bets. Their house edges range from 9 to 17 percent.

  • The Don't Pass bet has a slightly lower edge (1.36 percent) but you are betting against the table, which is socially awkward.

  • Learn the Come bet as your second bet. It works like a Pass Line bet made after the point.

Craps Strategy

The optimal craps strategy is simple: bet the Pass Line, back with maximum free odds, and optionally place the 6 and 8. That is it. Everything else on the layout has a higher house edge. The proposition bets in the center (Any 7, Any Craps, Hardways) are the worst bets in the casino and should be avoided entirely. The Field bet is a sucker bet despite its 2:1 or 3:1 flashing lights on 2 or 12 -- the house edge is 2.78 percent.

Table etiquette is a real part of the craps experience. Never say 'seven' at the table. Never throw the dice off the table. Handle the dice with one hand and keep them over the felt. When the dice come to you, give them good luck. Tip the dealers with a line bet on their behalf when you are winning. For the electronic version, see our electronic craps guide.

Where to Play Craps

Craps is available at most US casinos. The best craps games are found in Las Vegas, Atlantic City, and tribal casinos with large table game pits. Look for 3-4-5x odds or higher. Lower odds multiples (2x) are worse for the player. Some casinos offer 10x or 20x odds, which are the best craps games available.

Before you play, check the odds multiple on the table placard. Browse our US casino directory to find venues near you.

  • Why should I avoid proposition bets?

The one-roll proposition bets in the center of the layout carry house edges from roughly 9 to nearly 17 percent. They pay flashy odds but cost far more than the line bets over time.
