Two decks, often pitched face-down, 3:2 naturals if you’re careful, and a house edge that can land under 0.20% on the best Vegas felts. That’s as close to even money as the pit offers without learning a specialty variant.

The work is table selection. A double-deck felt paying 6:5 isn’t a good game — it’s a trap with fewer cards. H17 without DAS, shallow penetration, and $50 minimums on the Strip all eat the advantage. Spend two minutes on the placard and the scout below before you buy in. Compare to standard blackjack from a shoe if mins or rules don’t cooperate — a clean six-deck S17 game at 0.45% beats a 6:5 double deck every time.

Pitch games add etiquette overhead: one hand on the cards, scrape to hit, tuck to stand, no talking. Dealers will correct you. Once you’re comfortable, the slower pace is a feature — more time per decision, fewer hands per hour, lower hourly expected loss even at the same edge.

Where it fits on the floor

Double deck occupies the space between single-deck (rare 3:2, often 6:5) and the six-/eight-deck shoes that dominate Strip pits. Two decks lowers the house edge and makes counting more viable, which is exactly why casinos scrutinise these tables and shallow the cut card.

You’ll find double deck in three formats: pitch (face-down, hand-dealt), shoe (face-up from a two-deck shoe), and tournament layouts. Pitch is the traditional experience; shoe double deck is common at tribal properties and some Strip high-limit rooms. Rules vary more than shoe games — always read the placard.

Non-negotiable: 3:2 blackjack. Everything else is negotiable preference. S17 over H17, DAS over no-DAS, late surrender if offered. Penetration matters most for counters; recreational players still benefit from a deeper cut.

Strategy deviations from six-deck

Don’t use a six-deck chart at a double-deck table — roughly ten spots change. The big ones:

  • Double 11 vs dealer Ace (stand in many six-deck charts)
  • Double 10 vs dealer 10 (stand in six-deck)
  • Stand A-7 vs dealer 2 (double in six-deck S17)
  • Stand A-6 vs dealer 2 (double in six-deck)

Pitch etiquette in practice

Face-down games enforce hand signals for a reason: the dealer can’t see your mouth, and verbal calls create disputes.

  1. One hand on your cards at all times
  2. Scrape the felt toward you for a hit
  3. Tuck cards under your bet to stand
  4. Place chips beside your bet (not on top) to double or split
  5. Never touch your bet after cards are dealt
  6. Never bend or flash your cards to neighbours

Split aces usually receive one card each with no further hits. Some felts allow hitting split aces — rare and player-favourable.

El Cortez $15 double deck — still the move

Been playing the Cortez double deck for fifteen years. Pitch, 3:2, S17, DAS, decent penetration. Pit knows counters but tolerates flat bettors who know strategy. Scraped when I should hit, doubled 10 vs 10 when the chart said so — dealer nodded. $15 min is the best education on the Strip for real blackjack.
