Our take, after a lot of hands

Double deck blackjack is what you sit down for when you want fair blackjack without the single-deck 6:5 bait-and-switch. Two decks, often pitched face-down, 3:2 naturals if you’re careful, and a house edge that can land under 0.20% on the best Vegas felts. That’s as close to even money as the pit offers without learning a specialty variant.

The work is table selection. A double-deck felt paying 6:5 isn’t a good game — it’s a trap with fewer cards. H17 without DAS, shallow penetration, and $50 minimums on the Strip all eat the advantage. Spend two minutes on the placard and the scout below before you buy in. Compare to standard blackjack from a shoe if mins or rules don’t cooperate — a clean six-deck S17 game at 0.45% beats a 6:5 double deck every time.

Pitch games add etiquette overhead: one hand on the cards, scrape to hit, tuck to stand, no talking. Dealers will correct you. Once you’re comfortable, the slower pace is a feature — more time per decision, fewer hands per hour, lower hourly expected loss even at the same edge.

Where it fits on the floor

Double deck occupies the space between single-deck (rare 3:2, often 6:5) and the six-/eight-deck shoes that dominate Strip pits. Two decks lowers the house edge and makes counting more viable, which is exactly why casinos scrutinise these tables and shallow the cut card.

You’ll find double deck in three formats: pitch (face-down, hand-dealt), shoe (face-up from a two-deck shoe), and tournament layouts. Pitch is the traditional experience; shoe double deck is common at tribal properties and some Strip high-limit rooms. Rules vary more than shoe games — always read the placard.

Scout the felt before you sit

Two minutes here saves dollars all session. Check every box that applies to the table in front of you.

Two-deck games vary wildly. Check the felt before you sit — 6:5 blackjack wipes out the deck-count advantage.

Non-negotiable: 3:2 blackjack. Everything else is negotiable preference. S17 over H17, DAS over no-DAS, late surrender if offered. Penetration matters most for counters; recreational players still benefit from a deeper cut.

Strategy deviations from six-deck

Don’t use a six-deck chart at a double-deck table — roughly ten spots change. The big ones:

  • Double 11 vs dealer Ace (stand in many six-deck charts)
  • Double 10 vs dealer 10 (stand in six-deck)
  • Stand A-7 vs dealer 2 (double in six-deck S17)
  • Stand A-6 vs dealer 2 (double in six-deck)

A double-deck basic strategy card fits in your wallet and is worth carrying. Free Bet Blackjack and Blackjack Switch use entirely different charts — don’t cross them.

The math, honestly

Wizard of Odds’ 2025 Las Vegas blackjack survey: double-deck games with 3:2, S17, and DAS averaged 0.19–0.40% house edge. Comparable six-deck shoes ran 0.45–0.65%. Single-deck 3:2 can dip lower (~0.08%) but is nearly extinct; single-deck 6:5 is worse than any shoe.

Rule cost cheat sheet (approximate, added to base edge):

RuleCost if missing/wrong
6:5 vs 3:2 blackjack+~1.39%
H17 vs S17+~0.20%
No DAS+~0.14%
No late surrender+~0.08%
Shallow penetration+~0.05–0.10%

Session cost estimator

Defaults to ~0.35% edge (2-deck, 3:2, S17, DAS). Adjust edge if your table fails the scout.

Pitch games run slower (~60–70 hands/hr). Shoe double-deck can hit 100+. Side bets not included.

At $25 bets, 70 hands an hour, 0.35% edge: roughly $6 an hour expected loss. That’s among the cheapest hourly rates on the floor — cheaper than Free Bet Blackjack at standard rules and most house-banked poker. Insurance still costs ~7.4% — never take it unless you’re counting.

Pitch etiquette in practice

Face-down games enforce hand signals for a reason: the dealer can’t see your mouth, and verbal calls create disputes.

  1. One hand on your cards at all times
  2. Scrape the felt toward you for a hit
  3. Tuck cards under your bet to stand
  4. Place chips beside your bet (not on top) to double or split
  5. Never touch your bet after cards are dealt
  6. Never bend or flash your cards to neighbours

Split aces usually receive one card each with no further hits. Some felts allow hitting split aces — rare and player-favourable.

El Cortez $15 double deck — still the move

Been playing the Cortez double deck for fifteen years. Pitch, 3:2, S17, DAS, decent penetration. Pit knows counters but tolerates flat bettors who know strategy. Scraped when I should hit, doubled 10 vs 10 when the chart said so — dealer nodded. $15 min is the best education on the Strip for real blackjack.

Where to find 3:2 double deck

Las Vegas: Downtown — El Cortez, Golden Nugget, Fremont, Main Street Station. Off-Strip — Orleans, South Point, Red Rock, Green Valley Ranch. Strip — limited, usually $25–$50+ (confirm rules). Atlantic City: Borgata, Tropicana, Ocean (rules vary — scout first). Regional/tribal: Many properties offer $10–$15 double deck with 3:2; penetration and DAS vary. Browse our US casino directory and read the placard on arrival. If the felt says 6:5, keep walking.

How we sourced this

House edges and rule-cost tables from Wizard of Odds (2025 Las Vegas blackjack survey, double-deck basic strategy, 6:5 penalty ~1.39%). Strategy deviations from Wizard’s double-deck vs six-deck comparison. Pitch etiquette from Nevada Gaming Control Board approved procedures and standard casino dealing standards. Table availability from Las Vegas Advisor, Vegas Advantage surveys, and current property game listings. El Cortez and downtown references cross-checked against published minimum/rule reports.
