About Wheeling Island Hotel-Casino-Racetrack
Wheeling Island Hotel-Casino-Racetrack sits on Wheeling Island in the Ohio River at 1 S Stone Street in Wheeling, West Virginia, with racing roots that trace back to 1866 and a modern gaming operation run by Delaware North. Licensed by the West Virginia Lottery Commission and operating around the clock, the property combines a gaming floor with greyhound simulcasting, a 9-table poker room, and an on-site hotel that earns it both hotel and racino classifications in our directory. The age requirement is 21 across all gaming.
What sets Wheeling Island apart from West Virginia’s other gaming venues is its specific mix: a small but disciplined dealt menu, a poker room that punches above its weight, an active simulcast operation focused on greyhound and thoroughbred racing, and the convenience of attached lodging. The property is reachable in under an hour from Pittsburgh and roughly 90 minutes from Columbus, making it a natural mid-distance pull for the tri-state region. The other northern panhandle option, Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack and Resort up in Chester, sits about 40 minutes north.

Hotel and Resort Amenities
Wheeling Island runs as a hotel and resort destination as well as a gaming venue. The directory lists the property under both hotel and racino classifications, with banquet space, self-parking, valet, and around-the-clock operations as the standard amenity stack. The on-site hotel is the meaningful differentiator from peer venues like Mardi Gras Casino in Nitro or Hollywood Casino in Charles Town, both of which have no on-site lodging in our records.

A poker-and-hotel destination, not a slot-floor destination
Wheeling Island earns its spot in the West Virginia gaming map on the strength of three things: a poker room that runs more variants than the table count would suggest, an on-site hotel that lets the property double as a road-trip stop, and a simulcast operation tied to greyhound and thoroughbred racing. If you are chasing slot machine variety, Hollywood Casino at Charles Town and Mardi Gras both carry larger floors. If you are chasing a poker session and a bed within walking distance of your seat, Wheeling Island is the call.

Wheeling Island at a glance
Strengths and gaps based on directory data and the property profile, not a substitute for a visit.
Strengths
5- 9-table poker room with deep variant menu (Stud, Hold'em, Omaha)
- On-site hotel rooms, rare among West Virginia gaming venues
- Open 24/7 with banquet and event space
- Greyhound simulcasting and thoroughbred wagering on site
- Short drive from Pittsburgh via I-70
Watch-outs
4- Compact dealt-pit footprint compared to Hollywood Casino at Charles Town
- Slot machine count is modest in our directory
- Buffet and dining lineup has shifted over the years
- No live thoroughbred meet on the property itself
Best small poker room in the tri-state
If you live within 90 minutes of the Ohio panhandle, this is the poker room you should know. The 9 tables run a real schedule and the Stud and Omaha games actually go off, which is rare anywhere this side of Pittsburgh. Stayed at the hotel after a tournament and the walk back to my room took 90 seconds. Slot floor is small but I am not here for the slots. Simulcast room was busy on a Saturday afternoon.
