Ultimate Texas Hold'em (UTH) is a house-banked poker game played heads up against the dealer using Texas Hold'em hand rankings. You place an Ante and Blind bet, plus an optional Trips side bet. The twist: the earlier you bet, the more you can raise. Before the flop, you can bet 3x or 4x your Ante. After the flop, 2x. After the river, 1x or fold. Betting the maximum 4x pre-flop with strong hands is the heart of UTH strategy. Slow-playing (checking with a strong hand) is the most common and costly mistake. You'll find live tables at most major properties. See our full US casino directory for venue contact details and hours.

Ultimate Texas Hold'em is the most popular house-banked poker game and the one that best rewards aggressive play. Pre-flop, you have one chance to bet the maximum 4x. Strong hands demand an immediate 4x raise. Checking strong hands pre-flop is the most common misplay and the biggest driver of the house edge. The game uses standard Hold'em hand rankings and the betting structure creates constant decision points across three streets. For a simpler Hold'em variant, see Texas Hold'em Bonus.

How to play Ultimate Texas Hold'em

  1. Place equal Ante and Blind bets to start. An optional Trips side bet pays on your final hand strength.

  2. You receive two hole cards. The dealer receives two hole cards.

  3. Pre-flop decision: bet 3x or 4x your Ante, or check. Strong hands should bet the maximum 4x.

  4. The flop is dealt (three community cards). If you checked pre-flop, bet 2x your Ante or check.

  5. The turn and river are dealt. Make a 1x Play bet or fold. Folding forfeits your Ante and Blind.

  6. The dealer qualifies with a pair or better. The Blind bet pays a bonus on a straight or better.

Ultimate Texas Hold'em Rules and Payouts

UTH uses a standard 52-card deck. You post equal Ante and Blind bets. The optional Trips side bet pays on your final five-card hand: three of a kind typically pays 3:1, a straight 4:1, a flush 7:1, a full house 8:1, four of a kind 30:1, a straight flush 40:1, and a royal flush 50:1. Trips paytables vary by casino. The Blind bet pays a bonus scale on a straight or better: straight 1:1, flush 2:1, full house 3:1, four of a kind 10:1, straight flush 50:1, royal flush 500:1.

The dealer qualifies with a pair or better. If the dealer does not qualify, the Play bet pushes and the Ante pays even money. The Blind bet pushes when the dealer does not qualify unless the player holds a straight or better, in which case the bonus pays. The escalating raise structure means your decisions directly control the house edge on your total action.

  • When should I bet 4x in Ultimate Texas Hold'em?

Bet 4x pre-flop with any pair, any ace, any two cards ten or higher, and any suited holdings 9-10 or better. The pre-flop 4x option disappears after one decision, so bet aggressively with strong hands.

Editorial Strategy

Strategy & etiquette for Ultimate Texas Hold'em

  • Bet 4x pre-flop with any pair, any ace, any two cards ten or higher, and strong suited holdings.

  • After the flop, bet 2x with any pair, any flush draw, or open-ended straight draw.

  • After the river, make the 1x Play bet unless you cannot beat the lowest qualifying dealer hand.

  • Betting early is the heart of UTH strategy. The 4x option only exists pre-flop and it captures the most value.

  • Slow-playing strong hands is the most common mistake. The pre-flop 4x window closes after one decision.

  • Compare Trips paytables. The payout for a full house and flush varies between casinos.

Ultimate Texas Hold'em Strategy

The optimal pre-flop strategy: bet 4x with any pair of 3s or better, any ace, King-Queen or better, Queen-Jack or better, Jack-Ten suited, and any suited ace. Bet 3x with marginal hands like suited connectors and hands containing one face card. Check everything weaker. The pre-flop decision is the most important because the 4x option disappears after the flop.

On the flop, bet 2x with any pair, any flush draw, or any open-ended straight draw (8 outs or better). Check weaker draws. On the river, make the 1x Play bet unless you have a hand that cannot beat the dealer's lowest qualifying hand (pair of 2s). The dealer qualifies about 72 percent of the time. For the electronic stadium version, see our iTable UTH guide.

Where to Play Ultimate Texas Hold'em

UCT is widely available in the specialty pit at most US casinos. It is one of the most popular house-banked poker games and almost always has an open seat. The game is most common in Las Vegas, Atlantic City, and larger tribal casinos.

Before you sit, compare the Trips paytable. Browse our US casino directory to find venues near you.

  • What is the most common mistake in UTH?

Slow-playing strong hands by checking pre-flop. The 4x raise is the most valuable bet in the game. Missing that opportunity with a strong hand is a costly error.
