Horse racing is America's original wagering sport, a tradition stretching back centuries that today thrives at 32 US casinos and dozens of active racetracks nationwide. Pari-mutuel wagering — where all bets are pooled and divided among winners after the track deducts its takeout — is the foundation of every bet you will place, from a simple $2 win wager to a complex superfecta box. This guide covers how to bet on horse races, explains every bet type from win/place/show through trifectas and superfectas, and gives you the strategy tools to read a program and find value at the track or the racebook. You'll find live tables at most major properties. See our full US casino directory for venue contact details and hours.

Thoroughbred horse racing is the centerpiece of the American racing industry, anchored by iconic events like the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes — collectively the Triple Crown — as well as the Breeders' Cup World Championships each fall. At 32 US casinos with racing operations and dozens of standalone tracks from Saratoga to Del Mar, horseracing offers a depth and complexity that no other casino game can match. Unlike blackjack or slots, where the math is fixed, horseracing rewards skill: a bettor who can read a racing program, interpret speed figures, and identify value in the pari-mutuel pools has a genuine edge over the crowd. The sport's sister disciplines — harness racing, where standardbreds pull sulkies at a trot or pace, and greyhound racing — share the same pari-mutuel structure, but thoroughbred flat racing is where you will find the largest fields, the biggest pools, and the most betting opportunities. For those who want to bet horses without visiting the track, see our racebook guide.

How to play Horseracing

  1. Acquire a racing program or Daily Racing Form. This is your essential resource — it lists every horse, jockey, trainer, post position, morning-line odds, and past performance data for each race.

  2. Study the race you want to bet. Look at each horse's recent running lines, speed figures, class level, distance suitability, and jockey-trainer win percentages. Narrow the field to a few contenders.

  3. Choose your bet type. Beginners should start with a win bet (horse must finish first), place bet (first or second), or show bet (first, second, or third). As you gain experience, add exacta, trifecta, and superfecta wagers.

  4. Approach the betting window or kiosk and state: the track name, race number, bet amount, bet type, and horse number(s). For example: 'Santa Anita, Race 3, $2 to win on the 5.'

  5. Watch the race — live at the track or on the simulcast monitor. After the race is official, winning tickets can be redeemed at any mutuel window. Remember that odds are not final until the race begins.

  6. Collect your winnings. Payouts are determined by the pari-mutuel pool: the total amount wagered, minus the track takeout, divided among winning tickets. Payouts are displayed on the tote board based on a $2 base wager.

Game Rules and Payouts

Horseracing wagering is built on the pari-mutuel system: every dollar bet on a race goes into a common pool for that bet type. The track deducts its takeout — typically 15–17% for win, place, and show bets, and 19–25% for exotic wagers — and the remainder is split among winning tickets. The most straightforward bets are the win (first place), place (first or second), and show (first, second, or third). Place and show payouts are lower than win payouts because you are betting on your horse to finish in the top two or three rather than only first. Exacta requires picking the first two finishers in exact order. Trifecta requires the first three in exact order. Superfecta requires the first four in exact order. Because the odds of hitting these increase exponentially, the payouts can be enormous — a $1 superfecta that hits for $10,000 or more is not unusual in a full field. You can also box these bets, which means your selections can finish in any order (a $1 trifecta box with three horses costs $6 because it covers all six possible combinations). Daily doubles require picking the winners of two consecutive races, and Pick 3, Pick 4, Pick 5, and Pick 6 wagers extend that across three, four, five, or six races respectively. These multi-race exotics carry the highest takeout but also the potential for life-changing scores — particularly the Pick 6, which can carry over to the next racing day if no one hits it, building pools into the millions. Minimum bets are generally $2, though many tracks now allow $1 exacta and trifecta units. When your horse wins, payout is based on a $2 base: a horse paying $8.40 to win returns $8.40 for every $2 wagered. For a comparison of fixed-odds betting versus pari-mutuel, see our sportsbook guide.

  • What is the difference between win, place, and show bets?

A win bet pays if your horse finishes first. A place bet pays if your horse finishes first or second. A show bet pays if your horse finishes first, second, or third. Because place and show bets are easier to hit, the payouts are proportionally lower — but they are also excellent options for beginners learning to read a program, as they give you a higher hit rate while you build your handicapping skills.

Editorial Strategy

Strategy & etiquette for Horseracing

  • Master the program before betting real money. Spend time understanding speed figures (Beyer, Equibase), class levels (maiden, claiming, allowance, stakes), and running styles (front-runner, stalker, closer). This knowledge separates winning bettors from tourists.

  • Start with straight bets and low takeout. Win, place, and show bets carry the lowest takeout (15–17%) and are the simplest to handicap. Build a bankroll with these before graduating to exotics.

  • When playing exotics, box your selections rather than betting them straight. An exacta box with three horses costs $6 (six $1 combinations) and covers any order — far better than a $2 straight exacta that requires you to nail the exact 1-2 finish.

  • Look for value, not winners. The goal is not to pick the horse most likely to win — it is to find horses whose true chances of winning are better than the odds suggest. A 10-1 horse that should be 5-1 is a better bet than an even-money favorite that should be 3-5.

  • Pay attention to the tote board. Late money — large wagers placed in the final minutes before post — often comes from informed bettors. A horse whose odds drop significantly close to post time is drawing sharp action.

  • Manage your bankroll with structure. Set a daily betting budget and allocate it by race tier: perhaps two units on your strongest opinion, one unit on secondary plays, and half a unit on speculative exotics. Never chase losses by increasing bet size.

Game Strategy

Winning at horseracing over the long term is about discipline, not luck. The single most important habit you can develop is learning to read a racing program. Spend time with the Daily Racing Form before you ever approach the window. Focus on three things: speed figures (how fast a horse has run relative to the track and distance), class (the level of competition the horse has been facing — a horse dropping from allowance to claiming company is often a strong bet), and pace (how the race is likely to develop — a lone front-runner in a race full of closers has a tactical advantage). Value betting is the framework that separates winning players from the crowd. If you believe a horse has a 20% chance of winning (true odds of 4-1) and the tote board is offering 8-1, that is a value bet. If an even-money favorite should be 3-5, it is an underlay worth passing. When playing exotic wagers, use them selectively. An exacta box with three or four horses in a race where you have a strong opinion about the winner is a sensible play. A five-horse trifecta box in a 12-horse field is not — the math simply does not work. Consider building tickets around one or two key horses (singles) that you are most confident about. For more on exotic wagering strategy, see our detailed breakdowns in the simulcasting guide and the OTB guide.

Where to Play

You can bet on horse racing at 32 US casino racebooks, at active racetracks during live meets, and at hundreds of OTB and simulcast venues nationwide. The track itself offers an unmatched live experience — the roar of the crowd as the field rounds the far turn is something no screen can replicate. But for year-round betting, casino racebooks and OTBs with full simulcast schedules let you bet on tracks across the country every day of the week. Major racing destinations include Churchill Downs and Keeneland in Kentucky, Saratoga and Belmont Park in New York, Santa Anita and Del Mar in California, and Gulfstream Park in Florida. Las Vegas racebooks at Caesars Palace, the Wynn, and the Westgate carry every major simulcast signal and offer some of the best facilities in the country. Use our US casino directory to find horseracing and racebooks near you, including combined race and sports book venues.

  • What are exotic wagers and should I play them?

Exotic wagers require picking multiple horses in a specific order or across multiple races. Exactas, trifectas, and superfectas are the most common. They offer significantly larger payouts than straight bets because they are harder to hit. They are worth playing when you have a strong, specific opinion about a race — but they should be a smaller portion of your overall bankroll than straight win and place bets, because the takeout is higher and the variance is extreme.
