About Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races

Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races is the largest casino in West Virginia by table count and machine count, sitting at 750 Hollywood Drive in Charles Town on the eastern edge of the state. The property has been the locus of thoroughbred racing in this part of the country since 1933, when it operated as Jefferson County Races, and later as Charles Town Races and Slots before its current Hollywood branding. Real estate is owned by Gaming and Leisure Properties, and the casino is licensed by the West Virginia Lottery Commission. All gaming runs 24/7 with a minimum age of 21.

The eastern panhandle location is the property’s defining commercial advantage: Charles Town sits about 70 minutes from downtown Washington, DC and roughly an hour from Baltimore, putting Hollywood Casino within reach of one of the densest population corridors in the country. With 2,500 slot machines, 98 table games, a 16-table poker room, and a fully legal sportsbook, the property serves as a destination for the DC and Baltimore markets in addition to local West Virginia and northern Virginia visitors. The other West Virginia racinos, Mountaineer, Wheeling Island, and Mardi Gras, all sit at the opposite end of the state.

Games, Poker, and Sportsbook

The 98-table pit at Hollywood Casino is the deepest in West Virginia and one of the deepest in the broader mid-Atlantic region. The dealt menu covers blackjack, craps, mini-baccarat, roulette, Big 6, 3-card poker, four-card poker, Pai Gow poker, and Let It Ride, with both standard and electronic variants on the slot side. The 16-table poker room spreads 7-Card Stud, Limit Hold’em, No-Limit Hold’em, Omaha 8 or Better, Pot-Limit Omaha, and a heavy tournament schedule that draws regulars from the DC, Maryland, and northern Virginia poker community. Sports wagering operates under West Virginia law alongside the casino floor and the live racing meet.

Amenities and Dining

Hollywood Casino runs as a racino without an attached hotel: visitors stay in Charles Town proper or in nearby Harpers Ferry or Martinsburg. The on-property amenity stack centers on dining, with multiple restaurants, around-the-clock food service, self-parking, and valet. The live thoroughbred meet runs through most of the year, and the simulcast operation pulls in races from Saratoga, Belmont, Churchill Downs, and the other major tracks year-round.

The state's flagship gaming floor, full stop

Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races carries the largest table-game pit, the largest slot floor, and the largest poker room in West Virginia, paired with a live thoroughbred meet and a full sportsbook. For visitors from the DC and Baltimore corridors, it is the single most useful gaming destination in the state and one of the most useful within a 90-minute drive. The trade-off is no on-site hotel and a property footprint built around volume rather than resort intimacy. Visitors who want lodging attached should look at Wheeling Island or The Greenbrier instead.

The DC area's real casino

There is no other way to put it: this is the casino DC actually deserves. 98 tables, real poker room with Omaha 8 going on a Tuesday night, sportsbook is professional, and the live racing meet still runs. Drove in via 340 on a Saturday afternoon, traffic was fine, parking was free, walked onto a $15 blackjack table in 10 minutes. No hotel attached but I just booked a room in Harpers Ferry afterwards. Will come back monthly.
