How to play Texas Hold'em

  1. Two players to the left of the dealer button post the small blind and big blind. These forced bets seed every pot.

  2. Each player receives two hole cards face down, visible only to them. The first betting round begins with the player left of the big blind.

  3. The flop — three community cards dealt face up on the table. A second betting round follows.

  4. The turn — a fourth community card. A third betting round. Bet sizes double in limit Hold'em on the turn and river.

  5. The river — the fifth and final community card. A final betting round.

  6. Showdown: remaining players reveal their hands. The best five-card hand using any combination of hole and community cards wins the pot.

Texas Hold'em Rules and Game Flow

Texas Hold'em is played with a standard 52-card deck. Each hand begins with two forced bets — the small blind and big blind — posted by the two players immediately left of the dealer button. The button rotates clockwise after each hand, ensuring every player pays blinds in turn. After the blinds are posted, each player receives two hole cards face down. The first betting round (pre-flop) starts with the player left of the big blind, who can fold, call the big blind, or raise.

Once pre-flop betting concludes, the dealer burns a card and deals three community cards face up — the flop. A second betting round begins with the first active player left of the button. After flop betting, a fourth community card — the turn — is dealt, followed by another betting round. Finally, a fifth community card — the river — is dealt, followed by the last betting round. If more than one player remains after river betting, there is a showdown. Each player makes the best five-card poker hand using any combination of their two hole cards and the five community cards. The best hand wins the pot. If two hands are identical, the pot is split.

Texas Hold'em hands rank in the standard poker hierarchy: high card, one pair, two pair, three of a kind, straight, flush, full house, four of a kind, straight flush, royal flush. Suits have no relative ranking — a spade flush is equal to a heart flush.

Texas Hold'em Strategy for Beginners

The single most important concept for a new Texas Hold'em player is position. Your position at the table — early, middle, or late — determines how much information you have before you must act. The button (dealer position) is the most powerful seat at the table because you act last on every post-flop betting round. From the button, you see what every other player does before you commit chips.

Starting hand selection flows from position. From early position (first few seats after the blinds), play only premium hands: pocket pairs Jacks or higher, Ace-King, Ace-Queen suited. From late position, you can add more speculative hands like suited connectors (8-7 suited, 9-8 suited) and smaller pocket pairs that can flop big. Hands like Ace-rag offsuit and King-Jack offsuit are trouble hands that beginners overplay — they make second-best hands too often. When you raise pre-flop, size your raise to 2.5-3x the big blind plus one big blind for each limper in the pot. This builds the pot with strong hands and thins the field.

On the flop, ask yourself: did this flop help me? If you raised pre-flop with Ace-King and the flop comes 2-7-9 rainbow, you missed. A continuation bet (betting the flop after raising pre-flop) of about half the pot is often profitable because your opponent also likely missed. If you get called or raised, slow down.
